The Tale of the Tail

Sometime after L learned the proper potty procedures, he decided that he didn't want to call his penis by the appropriate name and started arguing with me telling me it is, in fact, his tail. I think he is happy to finally have a connection to all his favorite animals. I find this to be very cute and when he reasons with me to leave his tail free because "zephyr (our dog) no cover tail" it is sometimes hard to stick to the "must wear clothes" directive.

This is more amusing because almost a month ago he was able to dress up for preschool 2 days for 2 halloween parties. There were two parties to accomodate the groups of kids that only come on Tuesday and Thursday and the other group of kids that only come Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. L is part of a select group that gets to go every day.

The first day he wore his pirate costume and was very very cute. He knows what a pirate says and worked very hard to stay in character. The second day, I gave him the choice of wearing the pirate costume again or of wearing his puppy costume from last year. He happily chose the puppy. The hardest part of that was convincing him to walk on two legs rather than four.

All was going well and we made it all the way through the lobby and into the classroom before his teacher uttered the sentence that will forever burn in my memory as I wait for just the right moment to break this story out.

Are you wondering what she said? It was actually quite simple. She simply said, "Oh, what a cute puppy we have here. Can you show me your tail?". You can fill in the blanks, I am sure.

I uttered some ugly words yesterday. To most, they may not seem out of line, but here in the Great White North, one word in particular is seen as the worst of 4 letter words.

So are you curious about what I said that could have been so awful?

Are you?

Well, here it is. After rain the whole month of October and a few more days in the last week, I was overheard saying "I wish it would just SNOW and be done with it."

What can I say? I like snow. I also got my wish. The ground is blanketed in a wet slippery icky snow today. I should have been more specific and asked for something light and airy that didn't make driving a PITA. Live and learn.

I've Been Tagged for a Meme by Sandy.

Here's how it works: List each hour of the day and then a reason why that hour (anytime in the 60 minute block) is significant. If you want to play along then just create a timeline and start remembering. If you do play along please leave a comment here and tell us where to find your list. Want to see more sample time lines? Go to Sandy's blog - you can sneak a peak at hers and then everyone else she tagged:

So here goes a day in the life...

12:00 am: The After Prom Breakfast. I wore a red gown that made me feel like a princess that night.

1:00 am: Breastfeeding my son in the middle of the night is a memory I will never relinquish. I swear he had an internal clock and that early morning feeding was a magical time for the two of us to share our love. I will always cherish that time when he and I lived in our dream world of sleepy snuggles.

2:00 am: Bar closings in Tuscaloosa, AL, late Saturday night or early Sunday morning (whichever way you want to think about it).

3:00 am: This seems to be when a 3 foot bed hog likes to join me in my room.

4:00 am: When my soldier is here, his alarm goes off at 4:30 (o430 if you are in the army) each and every morning. I miss the early morning sleepy kiss before I would roll over and go back to sleep.

5:00 am: My brothers and I were not allowed to "wake" my parents before 5:00 am on Christmas morning. I remember watching Australian football on my older brother's 13 inch black and white television waiting for the clock to chime.

6:00 am: I took a pregnancy test upon waking up that would change my life forever for the better. The result of that test is only topped (in this time block) by the look on my soldier's face when I shared it with him.

7:00 am: JROTC Drill Team practice before classes started. We were a ranked team in VA and I still smile thinking that I could toss a rifle and and march with practised precision yet scoffed at batons!

8:00 am: 9/11 (central time). There are images that will be burned on my brain forever and they started when I stopped in to visit with a fellow teacher before the first bell of the day.

9:00 am: Our family loves to go out to breakfast on Saturday mornings and we usually get moving about 9:30 (ish).

10:00 am: Once upon a time, long long ago, I would sleep this late and bask in the laziness of then reading a book in bed until noon.

11:00 am: My wedding vows were said at this time in Golden, Colorado at the Astor House Museum. I couldn't have asked for a better day to join my life with my hero.

12:00 pm: My son heads off to preschool every day at this time for 3 hours. Somehow, that isn't as much time to do things as I thought it would be.

1:00 pm: Days of Our Lives is a habit I really must work on breaking. It is at this time that my DVR is kicking on to record it so that I can watch it later sans commercials.

2:00 pm: During the week, when my soldier would get an unexpected training holiday we used to hit a movie we wanted to see. Until he was about 18 months old our son was always up for junk food (okay, we also took his favorite fruits and cereals) and sound effects while his mom and dad enjoyed an (typically) empty theater without worries of bothering other patrons. Those were the days.

3:00 pm: My son was born during this hour via c-section and his arrival has changed my life for the better. There isn't a day that I don't thank God for giving him to me. He brings joy (and the occassional frustration) but I wouldn't go back to the time before him for anything.

4:00 pm: I start missing my soldier around this time of day because I know that the evening is stretching out in front of us without his homecoming to anticipate.

5:00 pm: Movie time on date nights. We can hit the last matinee so we aren't paying premium prices.

6:00 pm: Our family said our farewells for the next year. It was such a hard thing to drive away knowing that I would not see my husband again for many months and that he wouldn't be home for good for at least a year.

7:00 pm: When my soldier is home (so many routine things are different when he is away) we are sitting down to dinner and comparing our days. There is nothing sweeter than hearing my son say the blessing at dinner with a hearty AMEN to end it.

8:00 pm: Could my son please go to bed? PLEASE???????

9:00 pm: When I was pregnant you couldn't keep me awake past nine.

10:00 pm: I have a very nice string of beads that I earned the old fashioned way in New Orleans, LA once upon a Mardi Gras. Ahhh, the memories of wilder days gone by.

11:00 pm: I would really rather not think about being awake at this time. I am not much of a night owl and have never adjusted well to being up late.

Now, I would like to take this opportunity to tag a few friends. Tara, Jo, Sara, Jessica, and Dawn if you are so inclined, I would love to see what you do with this Meme. Anyone else is free to join in as well. Just leave a comment with a link to your site!

Sink or Swim

These are the ramblings of an army wife and mother working to keep the family afloat on the turbulent waters of life.

Deployments and secondary infertility are just two of the things between us and the life boats, but I have a feeling we will get there in time.
